I don't know that that is even an issue, let alone a key question.

How can it possibly matter?

Why cyclists feel the need to disown (in whatever far-fetched way) their own
in these circumstances is a mystery. I cannot imagine being upset by a media
description of (say) Peter Sutcliffe as a driver. Can you?

I don't know. Is Peter Sutcliffe particularly representative of drivers
in general?
