Thank you for posting everything I was about to post

If I leave Bathurst from the southern end to head home, I
even see a permanent black-on-yellow sign showing a bike.
Obviously intending to convey the message "watch for cyclists".

We have the same signs on our roads too now which also say to give
them 1.5m berth. Which would be fine, except they're almost always
more than 1.5 from the LHS edge of the road themselves. You're lucky
to find a straight stretch of road longer than 500m here, that means
constant bends with little to no visibility beyond them. So when we
encounter these pricks, we either take a chance and pass on the wrong
side of the road or pull up behind them. This, on a remote rural road
busy with logging trucks is just ridiculous.

Apparently they love doing rural marathons.

So it seems. It also seems they're out for a confrontation with other
road users and I won't be at all surprised when somebody finally loses
their **** and starts to take some of them out on purpose.

I encounter the lycra biker nazis nearly every time I travel
to Launceston. They come quite a way out from there, onto
fairly narrow, steep and windy roads. They frequently sit two
abreast in the middle of the lane, and you can suddenly come
up behind them on a tight bend going uphill, meaning they're
only crawling along while you're doing 100KM/H. And they
won't move over either, I've seen logging trucks stuck behind
them (who haven't a hope of passing them) and they still
won't move. Any sign of indignation from you is invariably
answered by the finger. Some of them must have a death-wish.

Absolutely. Anyone who has seen a logging truck rocking and
swaying all over the place as it takes a fast bend would never
tangle with one unless you're driving a tank. A fast tank.

They are the reason I put cameras in all my vehicles, after
a close shave some years ago where I nearly had to choose
between hitting the bike or the oncoming car (bike was in
the middle of my lane).

That's the basis of why I think they should pay equally and
be able to be held accountable. It's not about how much a
vehicle damages the road, it's about road trauma. A pushy is
just as capable of causing a huge pile up as any other
vehicle on the road.

Exactly right.

It's human nature for the first reaction to an emergency
situation to be avoiding the first collision. Often after that
you've sealed your fate.

Yes. That said, if I'm faced with the same situation again I'm not
going to risk hitting an innocent oncoming vehicle and also risking
serious personal injury to myself. I'll err on the side of risking
taking the bike out instead.
