Default Can Shimano ROAD front derailleurs be used with MTB shifters?

Okay folks.

Building up an MTB bike out of spare parts. Have Shimano front ROAD derailleurs but only MTB Rapid-fire type shifters. Can they be used together? Yes? No?

Cheers
