"Volvo unveils cyclist alert-and-brake car system

Volvo has announced it is releasing a cyclist detection facility which
should prevent fatal accidents.

The auto firm says vehicles fitted with the system will be able to
detect threats including a cyclist suddenly swerving out into a car's path".

Clearly cyclists, with no formal training, are causing so many RTC's
that a major car manufacturer has had to come up with a solution.

''As the severity of the injury increased the benefit of wearing a
helmet increased, which is very hard to ignore I think,'' Dr Olivier said.

Results showed that cyclists without helmets were more than 3.9 times as
likely to sustain a head injury to those with helmets. Helmets reduced
the risk of moderate head injury by 49 per cent, of serious head injury
by 62 per cent, and of severe head injury by 74 per cent".

Better and cheaper solution would be to ban the use of cycles on main
roads.

And even better and cheaper solution would be to insist motorists met
basic eyesight requirements

Being able to read a number plate when you were seventeen doesn't mean
you can see well at sixty

"a cyclist suddenly swerving"

If you need electronic devices to notice the path of large object
several yards ahead of you has changed direction, you shouldn't really
be driving

Wheras cyclists don't even have to prove that.

If you suddenly swerve into the path of a large motor vehicle, you

Bicycles are for Children. Like masturbation, something you should grow
out of.
There is something seriously sick and stunted about grown men who want
to ride a bike."

Motorists pay £45 billion a year in extra taxes, specifically so they
can use the roads.
Only £10 billion of this is spent of roads.

What concerns me is that the avoidance system might decide in any particular instance to swerve the car away
from the cyclist.

Possibly into the path of oncoming vehicles, or onto the pavement.

It would be ironic indeed if pavement motorists were created in this way.
