"Volvo unveils cyclist alert-and-brake car system
Volvo has announced it is releasing a cyclist detection facility which should prevent fatal accidents. The auto firm says vehicles fitted with the system will be able to detect threats including a cyclist suddenly swerving out into a car's path". Clearly cyclists, with no formal training, are causing so many RTC's that a major car manufacturer has had to come up with a solution. -- Dave-Cyclists VOHR ''As the severity of the injury increased the benefit of wearing a helmet increased, which is very hard to ignore I think,'' Dr Olivier said. Results showed that cyclists without helmets were more than 3.9 times as likely to sustain a head injury to those with helmets. Helmets reduced the risk of moderate head injury by 49 per cent, of serious head injury by 62 per cent, and of severe head injury by 74 per cent". |

What concerns me is that the avoidance system might decide in any particular instance to swerve the car away from the cyclist. Possibly into the path of oncoming vehicles, or onto the pavement. It would be ironic indeed if pavement motorists were created in this way. -- Kim Bolton |
