From the 2010 World Cup:-

"A Germany-Holland final will also allow their fans to use one of the
best chants in all of soccer. "Give us back our bicycles" is their
favorite chant when playing their neighbors to the East. It refers to
World War II when the Germans confiscated all the bicycles in Holland
after invading in 1940."
Doubtless for their own good.

Interestingly though, following a review of the evidence, the Dutch
Institute For Road Safety Research (SWOV) conclude[1]:

"All in all, the SWOV has concluded that a bicycle helmet
is an effective means of protecting cyclists against head
and brain injury."

"Floor Van Lamoen ... has been advocating helmet use since he suffered a
concussion in 2008 car-dooring incident". So don't ride in the door
zone, or ride in the door zone and wear a hat - which makes more sense,
I wonder.

That's what I thought. "I was so much of a numpty that I rode into a car
door and therefore everyone should wear a helmet". Oh dear.

I suppose if he'd have walked into a low beamed doorway, he'd have advocated
pedestrian helmets.

Bicycles ridden by Dutch psycholists might have posed a serious threat
to German Panzer tanks?

But increases neck injuries, some of which can lead to total
paralysis, due to the increased connection and leverage introduced by
the helmet.

This concentration on head/brain injuries, to the exclusion of other
types of injury, probably relates to the degree of aftercare and
expenditure needed from the State.

Why are cyclists be singled out? Surely car users are equally
susceptible too and should be made to wear helmets, especially
backseat child passengers, considering the very high and dangerous
speeds they are involved in?

Doug.

You weasel! Faced with proof that helmets work, you become even more
ridiculous & claim they cause neck injuries!

Thats almost as funny as Raving claiming they cause heart attacks & strokes!

Oh - the old 'well what about motorists then' ploy. Standard psycholist
mantra.

Seatbelts, pre tensioners, airbags, crumple zones. When cyclists have those
I'm sure motorists will wear helmets.

Dave - intelligent enough to realise that a push bike, like a skateboard, is
a kid's toy, not a viable form of transport.
