I have a friend who is coming over from the States and wants to learn to
surf and do some MTBing. Where do you think the ideal location is to do
both??

If it's in the summer, Anglesea on the Great Ocean Road would be a good
choice, but there are lots of other possibilities - areas both south and
north of Sydney on the outer suburban coast, Coffs Harbour/Bellingen area,
the Gold Coast, and even in WA the Margaret River district in the
south-west. Have a look at this for somediscussion of this topic:

Anywhere up and down the east coast. Of course no Mt Biker or surfer is really going to let you know their "best" spot, especially
to a yank ;-)

Fly into Sydney or Brisbane have surfing lesson

There's a lot of riding within an hour or two of Sydney (cant comment on Brisbane try here http://www.mtbdirt.com.au/ &
http://www.freetoride.com.au/).

Buy board & bike (probably best to bring) then a road trip up/down the east coast riding/surfing what looks good on the way as mood
dictates

Definitely. It costs about 90 USD to bring a bike. If you resell it
(technically illegal unless you paid customs on it coming in) you'll
probably make that much on it.
