Default Tire advice

A couple of us are planning on doing the Rosarito-Ensenada 50-mile ride
at the end of September. All of us have road bikes and are concerned
about tires because of the roads and those other nasties that let the
air out of them.

We have heard about "gator skin" type tires and slime liners, slime
tubes and slime.

What are the pros and cons you have experienced with these alternatives?

Are there others?
