Default Columbus SL Miele Rebuild Successfully Completed

I mentioned this rebuild on different threads wherein I asked for
advice.

Now that the rebuld and test rides are completed I posted some images
on Flickr of the bike as it looks now. It ended up being a vintage
rebuild as almost all of the parts on it are now Shimano N600. N600
was the designation given to the 600 groupset that superceded the
older 600 EX groupset in the early to mid-1980's. I was working at
Bloor Cycle shortly after that groupset came out. It was on a Miele
Beta that I bought at Pedlar Cycles on Avenue Road about that time and
just before I started working at Bloor Cycle.

Funny how plans can change once a project starts. I was going to put a
vintage Campagnolo groupset on it but I need a few components and I
wasn't prepared to pay the high prices for them on Evil Bay and I
wanted this bike on the road as soon as possible so that I could
enjoy riding it the mid weather we're having now.

Here's the link to the images. http://www.flickr.com/photos/73832500@N00/

Cheers

Very nice, sincerely.

Did you even go look at ebay prices for that off-side Campy crankarm
you wanted?

What's "evil" about ebay, pray tell?

I've done very well, with a few minor hiccups, for over ten years on
ebay-- including a smoking (IMHO) deal on a near-new (in terms of
actual road or trainer use) Litespeed Catalyst frame, Kestrel EMS Pro
carbon fork, King headset, seatpost clamp and front derailleur hanger
(all "new" to that frame) for $350. I've made many other good buys...
I would figure that would be right up your alley. One such N.Record
arm, slightly dingy with some ankle rub, just sold for $33 including
postage to the USA.
Or did you expect someone to "give" you one for $5 and some shipping?
I understand "YMMV", but "evil"? Not IME.

The "evil" (if you're basing that disparaging term on price) places
with the nice NOS Campy retro-parts tend to be the "specialist"
places. And they sure don't give away their "used" stuff, either;
plus, I've seen some places that "specialize" in polishing used parts
to a mirror gloss. Beware...

(Hastening to add, if I had a bike shop and I found and sold "vintage"
whatever, I would charge all the market would bear, especially for the
"NIB" items, and, frankly, let the scroungers go to Craigslist, ebay,
where-ever. "That's what it costs to keep the lights on and doors
open...".)

I knew someone years ago who had a similar Miele frame that he got as
part of a sponsorship-- he was a good "regional" racer, good enough
to, on occasion, butt heads with the national guys in the Eastern USA.
Nice looking bike, as is yours, and he liked the handling quite well.

IOW, good for you, enjoy!

BTW, my "vintage ride" is an early-90's Tommasini Prestige (Columbus)
SLX bike, with 8sp Campy Record Ergo (plus some Veloce or whatever) on
it. I get compliments on the appearance (which proves the admirers
aren't blind), and it carves corners like nobody's business. "Just
sayin'", it's a scrounger special, from the first day I saw it built
up with Shimano 600 back in '94 or so, and got it for "cost plus ten",
frame and fork only, because everyone was going to modern materials,
and bought the 8sp Rec. Ergo new from a shop not known to discount for
a song, after 9sp came out and no one wanted 8sp anymore. Similar with
a very low-mileage set of Record hubs built on Mavic rims, which were
an ebay item-- I might have paid $135-145 for those, shipped. Sharp,
close-up photos make for happy buyers and sellers...
