Default regrets if?

"He also said that he would have regrets if he 'B' sample test results
ended up confirming his positive A-sample"

This is one guy talking about what another guy supposedly said,
probably with translation several times, but it sounds bizarre.
Regrets *if* the B sample is positive? Does that mean regrets for
being caught or not hiding it well enough, rather than regrets for
doping?

everyone ( with the exception of millar) holds up their hands and says
I don't know how that got there, I didn't dope...I'm innocent, you
have to believe me

Basso: I didn't dope, but I was going to.
Wasn't he more of a "I didn't dope, but I wanted to be prepared for it
in case I had to" kind of thing?

I wasn't quoting him directly, I believe what he actually admitted to
was wordy and crafted by lawyers. In the interest of succinctity, I will
amend it to:

Basso: I didn't dope, but I was prepared to.

Is that better?

Well, I think he really believed it was important that he wasn't going
to unless
other riders and circumstances forced his hand. That is an important
distinction, I
think. This is a case when being succinct doesn't give his line as good a
view as it
deserves.

I think he really believed it was important that he not be stripped of
his Giro title. If he had admitted that he'd been doping, that was a
certainty.

Ay.

Given my belief, it's true that I'm unlikely to give his line an
especially good view. I will freely admit that.

I'll freely agree with that too.
