Default Slime liner sliced my inner tube

I just got back from a bike ride and a long walk where I had a
puncture caused by my brand new Slime tyre liners in my mountain bike.
Yes... it's 9 at night. It had sliced through the inner tube inside my
rear tyre. The liner has left a permanent impression of itself on the
rubber of the inner tube, a clear score following the edges of the
liner, and the slice is about a centimeter long right beside the
overlap where the two ends of the liner meet. I didn't modify the
liners in any way and followed the installation instructions exactly.
I'd read a warning before buying them about this possibly happening,
but the positive comments on the liners were overwhelming so I'm
shocked that it's true. I doubt I can trust the inner tube now that
it's been badly weakened, and I'll have to replace the tube in the
front tyre too as I expect it's suffered the same damage. I hope
Wiggle refund me the cost of the liners cos I'm having to buy two new
inner tubes now. Has anyone got any advice on how to prevent
punctures as I'm getting very tired to having to repair whilst on the
road?

Use Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres.

You can't be serious. You fitted a component after reading about it causing
problems yet still expect a refund?

You'll never totally eliminate punctures. You can reduce the frequency of
getting punctures by:

Choosing appropriate tyres
Replacing tyres when they are very worn
Using correct inflation pressures
Avoiding glass and thorn strewn surfaces.

I know, I know, but it was only one post amongst a huge number of
others saying how fabulous they are. I've no use for them now so
sending them back to Wiggle with a begging letter is no hassle. I
expect I'll go for puncture resistant tyres like Danny recommends and
replace the Panaracers I just bought. More money down the drain. I do
a lot of night riding and really need to avoid punctures, or paint my
tyre irons in florescent colours so I can find them the next time they
ping off the wheel into the darkness.

....Specifically by avoiding the edges of roads where glass and debris tends
to collect, and avoiding foot/cycle lanes and paths altogether unless you
have really tough tyres.

Extra puncture resistance is needed if you ride a lot in the wet as well, as
objects penetrate more easily when wet.

That's a standard and well known problem with tyre liners. The best you
can do to reduce it is to take a soldering iron and feather the edge
that caused the cut by melting and smoothing it. Personally I would put
them in the bin and given you went ahead despite the warnings you read,
you can hardly return them for doing something unexpected.

If you buy flourescent paint and then find that it doesn't flouresce in
the absence of UV ie when dark, will you also blame the paint makers?

Seconded. The other day I went round picking out flints and thorns from mine and was
amazed at what I'd picked up over the summer. Some wicked flints and at a guess I'd say
4-5 punctures-worth.
