Saying Hi on the Bike Path

When passing by another biker on a path do you: Vocalize a Greeting? Gesture a Greeting? Stare at the other biker to se if they are going to say or do anything? Stare stoically straight ahead? Pay no attention to what other people are doing? or... IF they are wearing a helmet, they get a nod, a wave, a smile and sometimes all 3. When they have no helmet I don't even notice them. You can pretend you don't, but I hear the shifting and the heavier breathing once I am in front. :-D |

Stare at the other biker to se if they are going to say or do anything? Surely it depends where you are. If you are in Cambridge UK, with more cyclists than Amsterdam, greeting every cyclist would be ridiculous - more than a quarter of the traffic is bikes. However, if you are somewhere where you only see one or two cyclists a week, that's different. Here in Britain it's the practice to say good morning, or hi, or whatever, when overtaking a cyclist, rather than "passing on the right", or ringing a bell We have a fair number of people on horses too, and we say hi to them as well, but that's only to avoid spooking the horse. Anyway, I burn testosterone on the dirt bike, and sometimes the mountain bike - I ride the road bike to get places and exercise. Solo, on-road cycling never struck me as much of a testosterone & adrenaline type thing. I never responded to the original post, but around here we just nod to
the other rider, if anything at all. No talking, though. Not being rude, but that is traditional. |
