A new way for psycholists to mow down the vulnerable
Cycle lanes will be cut into pavements to allow cyclists to pass to the left
of stationary buses rather than having to move into the car lane. http://www.standard.co.uk/news/londo...s-8428588.html |

"David Kent, London engagement officer of Guide Dogs for the Blind, said the design would put visually impaired people at risk. "He said: “Cyclists are impossible to hear — they are the silent menace. Where it puts our particular client group at risk is exactly with designs like this.” It is bound to be seen by cyclists as carte blanche to behave even worse then they do at present and it puts *all* pedestrians at risk. And you can bet that there will be no question of most cyclists obeying instructions to give way where the bowl-over-the-pedestrians lane rejoins the carriageway, right in front of the bus. |

Why they are going to build this long island out in the road, with a silly narrow channel for cyclists between it and the proper already- generous-enough pavement? They should have a nice wide road with plenty of room for cyclists to overtake the bus on the right. Or,if they must have an island why not surround it with railings to prevent the pedestrians, sighted or not, bumbling off it in all directions, menacing cyclists and their other fellow road-users. As for cyclists being too quiet, well you have to ask yourself whether blind pedestrians are viable these days. Still I suppose that cyclists, as a gesture of goodwill and not admitting any responsibility, could make themselves as noisy as motor vehicles. I should prefer this:- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBvC2Wd-Jfw but some might go for:- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMZrW0p2INY Probably would help the deaf a bit as well. |

The system in the Standard works perfectly in Europe: there again we have less knuckle-dragging Luddite bigots. |

You forgot to say that pedestrians should wear helmets, especially in the shower. -- Dave - Cyclists VOR. "Many people barely recognise the bicycle as a legitimate mode of transport; it is either a toy for children or a vehicle fit only for the poor and/or strange," Dave Horton, of Lancaster University, wrote in an interim assessment of the Understanding Walking and Cycling study. "For them, cycling is a bit embarrassing, they fail to see its purpose, and have no interest in integrating it into their lives, certainly on a regular basis." |
