EVERYONe gets a belt buckle, pendant and necklace for finishing inunder 12 hours (women get the necklace and pendant..not men) --
I raced the Leadville 100 last year -- and finished 5th overall. I
beat Wendy, yet still didn't podium because my age group was stronger. I don't mean to be insensitive here, but no one really cares about age groups in this race (it isn't even posted in the results). During the awards no one was paying attention...the only think people really cared about was waiting for lance, and then going in and out of the gym to get there sweat shirt. The only thing that the podium gets is some large dust collector thing...not sure even what it was...paper weight? NO money, no swag...nothing.... So...if I had finished after Wendy or it had personally effected my place would I be mad? I doubt it...maybe a little, but not to a point that I would think for one second they deserve this. FELONY?? Isn't that was USA cycling is for, to impose sanctions when rules are broken? I was going to race 24 hours of Leadville in lead up to the world 24 hour champs this year...but I no longer feel I can support someone who feels this is ok. This is a message from a friend of mine who knows the girls well (I don't really know them) From the article "Just before last August's race, Chlouber said he received a call from a local bike-shop owner pleading for an entry number for Brazelton, who did not win a slot in the lottery. Chlouber granted the request." Katie won her entry in January, like everyone else. She sent in her entry with a group of 10. Only 6 got in, and she was one of them. She got without special favors. Ken does not offer transfers, and in fact if you ask, he will impolitely tell you THERE ARE NO TRANSFERS. Period. Even if you have died, even if you are pregnant, even if you have had 3 surgeries. NO TRANSFERS...but he'll surly sell your open entry for another $250. His going to the press weeks before their hearing is simply a media stunt. Notice no cycling websites have picked up the story. What they did was stupid, but we all know it happens. Was there true harm? Katie and Wendy's livlihood are at stack. They can't come back, like dopers, in two years and have their jobs back. A felony, even a charge, is serious. Too far. Please spread support for these two friends. They don't deserve criminal punishment for riding a race run by an ego manic. |

The top finishers in this race are likely to be much older than the top finishers in other types of bike racing, so it kind of turns the age group thing on its head. For instance it would be a lot more impressive for a 25-year-old to beat Dave Wiens than it is for Wiens to beat the 25-year-old. |
