The garden route area is a bit of a tourist trap, especially in the (southern hemisphere) summer. The commercial tours probably use high priced luxury bed and breakfasts so in theory you should be able to do it for less by staying at cheaper no frills B&B's or backpacker hostels. It would probably be a good idea to get a map and plan which towns you want to stay in on the way so you can try to find cheaper accommodation ahead of time. You could have a look at: http://www.gardenroute.co.za/ although you can sometimes find cheaper alternatives by googling the name of the town and bed and breakfast or B&B, or looking at some of the backpacker web sites. Some of the resort towns are more expensive, for example Knysna, so you could try to avoid staying there. If you're planning on coming in the southern hemisphere winter then around the start of July you might find some company as some Cape Town cyclists ride from Cape Town to Knysna for a race in Knysna (the road race is normally on the first Sunday in July, with the more well known MTB race being on the Saturday). |
