Forgive me if I'm wrong but don't professional cyclists (and especially tdf
ones) have a particularly short lifespan? I wish I could find the info on
the web but IIRC professional cyclist are pretty much renowned for dying
relatively young.

That's down to the "gear," not the activity. Regular cyclists in the UK
live around ten years longer than the average span.

Generally true of most professional athletes. Chris Brasher was an
exception. Those who maintain their fitness do OK but most stop when they
retire (at a relatively young age) from competitive sport.
