Rare Bugatti crashes into trees

A car worth more than £800,000 was involved in a collision with a van
before crashing into trees.

The accident occurred in heavy rain on a 40mph section of Renfree Way,
Shepperton, Surrey, on Sunday.

The rare Bugatti Veyron collided with a Vauxhall Astra van carrying a
pregnant woman, who was taken to hospital as a precaution but later went
home.

No one else was hurt but police have reported the Bugatti driver for
driving without due care and attention.

Surrey Police said the luxury car was driven by a man who had a male
passenger with him.

A man and a woman were travelling in the Astra.

The accident occurred at 1440 GMT and the road was closed until 1630 GMT.

The eight-litre, hand-crafted Veyron has a top speed in excess of 250mph.

The 1,000 horsepower Bugatti can accelerate from 0 to 60mph in 2.5 seconds.

Other reports of the same incident allege that the driver was ignoring
the speed limit, instead judging a safe speed for himself. Ignoring it
by about 60mph ...

Earlier the BBC coverage was similar to this...

In as much as saying the car was doing 100mph at the time.

Schadenfreude.

Those Germans have a word for everything.

"It is claimed the car was rented to the driver for £20,000 a day."

Wonder if he ticked the box for the extra insurance?

Wonderful things aren't they, speed limits(!) They are suuuuch a
reliable way of ensuring that motorists stick to an appropriate speed.
Let's base our whole road safety strategy on them - that'd make a /lot/
of sense.

Let's ignore those foreigners who are insisting that removing
regulations actually reduces traffic speeds AND eliminates serious road
crashes - what can they possibly teach us. ;-)

Frighteningly, the road where this occurred is on my regular lunchtime
circuit. The crash appears (from the photo in The Sun) to have been on
the Shepperton bypass part of the B375, heading west.

Tuppence says the local troll will claim this mayhem as a reason for
abandoning attempts to control the speed of motorists...he's awfully
good at claiming that black is really white; best thing is to nod
sagely and ignore it.

I expect - nay, I dearly hope - that the insurers have an exemption
where speed in excess of that permitted is the cause of damage.
