Cycling from Land's End to John O'Groats on two wheels is hard enough,
but Bath student Sam Wakefield was last night preparing to make the epic
journey on just one.

The 20-year-old unicyclist, of Batheaston, hopes his 1,000-mile journey
will help raise more than £2,000 for the charity Tearfund.

But with the other five members of his party using regular bikes, the
former St Brendan's College student knows he might look a bit out of
place.

"Unicyclists don't like to be seen as clowns, but it is hard to take
yourself too seriously when you are on one, " he said.

"I unicycle to work every morning, and a lot of people laugh at me. But
it is my main method of transport and it is good fun." Sam is confident
he can keep up with the other cyclists in his group - all friends at
Aberystwyth University - and claims his unicycle is better at going
uphill than the two-wheeled model.

But he added: "I have got to pedal a lot more than the others and it is
very tiring going downhill, so it will be quite tough. But I'm really
looking forward to it.

"I want to use this event to raise support for Tearfund because they do
so much vital work, tackling poverty around the world." Staying in youth
hostels, friends' houses and campsites, the team will start at Land's
End on August 30 and pass through Bath before, hopefully, reaching the
northernmost point of Britain on September 21.
