Anderson receives grant to build Ohio River trail
Anderson receives grant to build Ohio River trail
By Steve Kemme Enquirer staff writer ANDERSON TWP. - The township has received $773,000 in federal money for the construction of a 1.3-mile section of a planned bike and hiking trail along the Ohio River. Anderson Township's piece, between Sutton and Five Mile roads, will be the first part of the 16-mile Ohio River Trail that will connect Lunken Airport and New Richmond to be built. This trail has the potential to connect with the Little Miami Scenic Trail, the Lunken Airport Bike Path, the Ohio-to-Erie Trail and the planned Cincinnati Riverfront East Trail. Anderson Township officials say the bike and hiking trail will mesh well with township plans to create an entertainment district on Kellogg Avenue near the Ohio River. "I'm very excited about this," township trustee Peggy Reis said. "It will connect to our own trail system, which is designed to get people out of their cars as much as possible and enjoying the outdoors." Anderson Township has supported the Ohio River Trail from the earliest planning stages. Reis said she hopes that by building its portion of the trail, Anderson will inspire neighboring communities to follow suit. The first segment of the trail will be completed by late 2008 or early 2009. The township was awarded federal transportation grants of $553,000 and $200,000 for this project. Anderson will contribute $167,000 and will pay for engineering costs. http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.d...508120385/1056 |
