Bought and tried a face mask last year. Only wore it once. While
breathing unfiltered car exhaust (on a recumbent trike particularly) is
certainly unpleasant, not being able to breathe at all proved far worse.

As opposed to a neck warmer in polar fleece or lycra in winter, which is now
essential kit in the cold.

The best $20 I ever spent in keeping warm - also works rather well on a
motor bicycle, skiing or kayaking - anything outdoor and cold.

Many examples around - try googling polar buff for one commercial example.

Best, Andrew
