JT Dear John, I'll send you pix of the helmet if you wish - and, no, I probably wouldn't be dead, but I sure wouldn't be near as happy a camper as I am right now. The here I was referring to was slouched in front of the 'puter. Thanks for clarifying that you aren't necessarily against helmets, but rather that you think I am one of a group of individuals that exaggerate their accidents related to helmets. Do you think it's for some sort of weird self-aggrandizement or do you view it as more of a opportunity for a helmet-proponent (which I am, but hardly vocal) to try to score points in the on-going helmet wars? Or perhaps another theory? App |

The here I was referring to was slouched in front of the 'puter. Well, I'll admit that before bike helmets were invented, there were very few bike crash victims who followed up by typing on the internet. I suppose that will pop up in some future helmet promotion effort. But I don't think it means much. - Frank Krygowski |

JT Dear John, I'll send you pix of the helmet if you wish - I don't need to see it - I know what th deal is - it was completely crushed, exploded, whatever -- I;ve seen that. and, no, I probably wouldn't be dead, but I sure wouldn't be near as happy a camper as I am right now. The here I was referring to was slouched in front of the 'puter. OK -- writing "(I probably wouldn't be here if the helmet hadn't been there). But alive and kicking." is rather misleading. I was writing in response to the apparent claim you'd have been dead w/o a helmet. In such a case, unless you are some sort of expert on destruction of the materials in helmets, or accident reconstruction, I simply don't think you or most people who make the "I would have been dead claim" have the expertise to really make that assesement. And given how many times we hear it, in contrast to how few people we hear about how's heads are cracked open and die w/o a helmet, it seems implausible. I think the fact that you are (as you describe yourself) a "helment proponent" would make it likely that you (subconsciously probably) want to believe that the helmet saved your life. I'd speculate that it didn't hurt you -- maybe saved you from some sort of injury. But death? Tha'ts quite a long shot. Maybe. But it's hard to know that and it's probably not true. Helmets probably help -- that's why I usually wear one. For sure they help from scrapes and cuts, and maybe sometimes even concussions. They might even save lives or prevent permanent injury sometimes. But there is no way that the majority of "the helmet saved my life" stories coudl be true. It's not plausible. Helmets and wind noise
I propose a controlled test : Assemble a pack of 100 cyclists, 50 with
helmets, 50 with out, randomly spread out over the right lane of a typical two lane road, though reasonably bunched together front to back to simulate a large group ride. Then, to simulate actual riding conditions in Dallas (where I ride), have a Lincoln Navigator or equivalent plow through the rear of the pack at 50 mph on a 35 mph road, yelling "OUT OF THE WAY !!!! GET OFF THE ROAD !!!". Then, simply count the bodies, with and with out helmets. -- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Be bold, and mighty forces will come to your aid" -Anthony Hopkins "App" wrote in message oups.com... Apparently there are still people who are convinced that bike helmets save a detectable number of lives when people are hit by 50 mph cars. Amazing! - Frank Krygowski |
