Bicycles were very dangerous machines before the invention of the
"safety" and were not in common use. When the 'safety' was produced
and people actually started using bicycles for transport there were
already cars on the roads.

That's why I chose 1893 - the "Safety" bicycle was well established by
then:

...and I doubt that there were significant numbers of automobiles on
public roads at that time.

Oh utter bull****. Early cars were made from bicycle technology.
The first "safety" was built in 1876 and the first motor car was
patented in 1886 (not exactly a production run there). The really funny
bit when looking this stuff up is that the first automobile mentioned
was actually a four wheel pedal car. and yes, I am ignoring the various
forms of steam driven vehicles.

In any case, it wasn't until after WWII that cars started to dominate
the roadways. In certain locations, it was a flood of workers bicycles
that dominated the scene. Even the NRMA(NSW) relied on bicycles when
they first started, although this is now whitewashed from their history.

And the australian guy who wrote the first Australianmotor car touring
guides survey the routes on a bicycle. He did it to sell his line of
motorist garments.
