This summer, my in-laws will be looking after our daughter for a week
and we've considered having a go on a tandem somewhere. Can anyone
recommend somewhere where we might be able to hire a tandem for a day or
more?

BikeTrax in Edinburgh do, as does the other place off the Royal Mile
that hires bikes whose name I've forgotten (shamefully, as I had a much
loved ex-hire bike from there)

I imagine there's a fair few other places that do.

whereabouts are you based ?

We're in Preston.

I'm in Settle. You're welcome to borrow ours for a weekday, if you're tall
enough (how tall?)

I'm 5'11" and three-quarters (I hope to gain that extra quarter of an
inch one day), Kate's 5'2".

Thank you very much for your generous offer. What is your email address
so that we can discuss this further? Mine is luke at shrimper dot org
dot uk

Cheers,
Luke

On uk.rec.sailing Sandy recently announced that he had retired from the
bicycle hire business.

London Recumbents, Dulwich Park.

I thought they were rather pricey at £10/hour, but having looked at
their website, they refer to better prices for longer hires.

Or YCHAGM on mine. I'm in Crawley, W Sussex.

Tim

Thanks for the offer, if we are ever in your part of the world I might
take you up on it. We're in Gloucestershire and tend to go any
direction but east when we travel. (We both used to live in London and
don't miss it one little bit.)

Kate and I gave up cycling together quite some time ago as she got fed
up at being left behind on hills (both up and down) and I got fed up
waiting for her to catch up.

Clumber Park (National Trust) near Worksop has some along with mountain
bikes for hire, but they only have a few so you'd have to go when it's
raining or get there at opening time to get one!

I think there's lots of paved routes around the park but I'm not sure how
well their tandems would cope with the trails.

Well the hills at Clumber park may not be so bad for individual bikes.
It's a nice location too, variety of trails to explore, either round the
lake, or venture off into the woodlands a bit.

Peak Trails in Derbyshire do tandem hire too

http://www.peakdistrict.gov.uk/index/visiting/cycle/cycle-prices.htm

as do the High Peak Trail @ Middleton top (Derbyshire).

http://www.derbyshire.gov.uk/leisure...ecreation/cycl
e_hire/

check pdf for pricing. Just head north from that location, south drops
you into two successive 1:8 downhills that aren't much fun. Well not to
come back up anyway. I parked at High Peak Junction last weekend so
started my ride with those two big inclines :/

I have retired from business and almost all the bikes have gone -
however - SWAMBO and the weans told me that we needed to keep some
bikes for the family - 3 boys with partners meant 1 tandem, 1
piggyback, 1 trailor and 15 assorted bikes.

If the OP wishes to try the tandem he is most welcome however it will
be loaned and NOT hired as I no longer have business insurance cover.

Indeed it did, along with a couple of others. Thank you all. It's been a
busy week so I shall reply in detail this evening.

Cheers,
Luke
