Why didn't Lance respond to Contador's challenge? Why might he not, the
next time around?

Well, it's because of higher obligations, the rules, the team, the plan.

He'll be citing US foreign policy, the categorical imperative or the ten
commandments next.

Obviously the TdF is a team sport and success is likely to be dependent
on the team loyally supporting its leader. Unfortunately Astana appears
to have several possible leaders.

Perhaps Armstrong is playing loyal to the Director now in order to gain
an advantage amongst the team later? Certainly it's two more weeks to go
and Armstrong doesn't look defeated yet.
