Well, I have to add another danger to the list of fixed gear drawbacks
that was posted on r.b.t. That is, they're so damn fun that some are
attempted to try tricks they can't easily do on a freewheel equipped
bike. In fact, my new slogan is Fixed Gears Add Fun to the Flats, or
FAFF for short.

Anyway, the one and only trick I would like to accomplish so far is
riding backwards. Today after I was mostly done with a ride that I
didn't want to end, because fixed gears add so much fun to the flats,
and since I had some light left I figured I would try to ride backwards
in the parking lot of a local B of A. Well, on my first attempt I rode
backwards for 30 feet or so, then I struggled for the next 15 minutes.
Then I relaxed again and went with the flow. Cool, I'm riding
backwards. Until I turn the bars left and lean right for some stupid
ass awkward reason. I instantly slammed backwards down on my ass with
some part of my frame hammering my shin bone. I now have a 2 inch
hematoma sticking out of my shin.

But I did get right back up and try it again with modest success before
heading the rest of the way home.

You established in another thread in that group that you don't quite "grasp"
how to turn a handlebar (note singular, BTW).

Couldn't resist. eg

You loony! Trix are for kids. I just got back from riding with the
fixie kids in LB. They know who I am now.

Of course it's a lot easier to go backwards in circles, and for some reason
easier with off road tyres, and easier again with a smaller gear.
I don't practice them much but I once showed up late to a bike messenger
party and won the backwards circle comp thanks to not being as drunk as
everyone else. That was with only 3 or so circles. It was messy...

Ouch. I got a nice shin lump Saturday. I was bombing down a jeep road
and flipped a softball sized rock up into my right shin bone, just above
the ankle. Oh man that hurt. I actually had to stop my descent and
whimper to myself about it for a little while. Now it's turning a nice
shade of purple. The sound it made was sickening.

And on the fixie front, I rescued an old 10 speed over the weekend from
a scrap metal recycling drive. It's got potential. I'll report back when
I start getting it figured out. I also got some cool old antique wagon,
tractor, and I think maybe a only Ford (model A or T) wheel for "yard
art". Sweet!

Matt
