Hi, When riding my new bike, I hear a sound as if you hit a spoke gently with another spoke that you hold in your hands. I only hear it when accelerating or when I'm out of the saddle sprinting. I would say it's either the chain or the D-A 9S bottom bracket. Does anyone recognize this sound? I thought someone else would suggest it, bit no one has: is your shoe ticking the FD cable end? (Rear tire can also do it in certain gear combos.) Bill "just back from a root canal" S. |

Changed the chain no funny sounds or that dame vibration felt in your feet. There must be groups devoted to dame vibrations felt in feet. I think it's illegal in Texas. -- A: Top-posters. I ruled that out, because I have Ksyrium SSC-SL wheels, so the spokes don't touch. Interesting thing today: an amateur rider brought his Ksyrium wheel to my LBS where I come too often, but that aside: one of the spokes just came out of the hub side. Nothing broke, though. A sales rep from Mavic was there too and said this sometimes happens when people make very abrupt moves during races. That's comical. I've tried oil in the one that makes noise, but that is only temporary. I'm thinking of trying grease. I think I've seen a thread on this issue with Open Pros. Are they any other solutions for this one? I wonder whether this is the ferrules being stressed beyond their design due to excessive spoke tension. My open4 ferrules seem to be over engineered in that the steel used is quite thick for the job required. Should the ferrule not be seated equally on top and bottom of the rim, it will move as the tension in the spoke varies. A thinner ferrule would allow deformation upon assembly so the ferrule transfers load via both rim faces. Trevor |

I thought we were all amateur riders although there are some professional racers. I'm curious what you mean by "amateur rider"? So what allowed the spoke to "come out of the hub"? Did the spoke or the flange break? A sales rep from Mavic was there too and said this sometimes happens when people make very abrupt moves during races. Did he say hub failure is to be expected? If so, don't buy these wheels. Wheels components are not supposed to break other than to collapse a rim if the wheel experiences great side loads. Other than that, wheel parts should not break even in a crash. The reason for this is that suckling a wheel does not increase spoke tension significantly so hubs have no excuse to break.
