Bikes from curbside collection (Perth)
I know some people here might appreciate the tip. Visiting my parents
in Murdoch, it appears that its curbside junk collection time. On Raffaele Place I saw a couple of bikes left out which seemed to have all their bits. They were a cheap mountain bike and an early 90s hybrid style bike. Both seemed to be in adult size. I didn't stop to inspect them closely so I can't vouch that they really are rideable, but I guess anyone in the Murdoch vicinity cruising for free bikes might want to drop in on Raffaele Place this weekend, and the surrounding streets too I guess. was almost, but not quite, entirely unlike tea: Probably been and gone by now. I do like the attitude of some of the people dumping stuff. I've seen stickers on items saying such things as "Works - just needs plug" or "Handle loose, otherwise fine". Depends on the suburb though, at either extreme they have the gall to throw out *rubbish*! Somewhere in the middle you can find the occasional gem. Not seen a welder yet though (which somebody mentioned on here that they'd seen one time) I've not done any dedicated searching for yonks though. Aha, 2 enormous welders at Swinburne just prior to me moving out, after the truck had already left with my belongings (not that I'd be able to get the transformers home anyway). -- TimC It has been said that physicists stand on one another's shoulders. If this is the case, then programmers stand on one another's toes, and software engineers dig each other's graves. -- Unknown |

That was a while back that you mentioned that and I've been looking ever since. I'll be suing for psychological damage for all the hopes raised and dashed again, that's if I don't get done for kerb crawling for driving slowly down residential streets! -- Graeme |

I subscribed to the local FreeCycle list a few years back until the signal to noise ratio became far too low. I got fed up with people asking for stuff (rather than offering it) in such a way as to sound massively ungrateful before they've even received anything. It may have improved though so I'll check it out for a while. -- Graeme |

That would be me - picked up on one of my hard rubbish day jaunts in Melbourne a couple of years ago: http://www.otherpower.com/images/sci...freewelder.jpg My brother has it now, as I already had one just like it. We don't get hard rubbish day in Canberra, gee I miss it! :-( BTH |

I got my first welder by putting an ad in the local paper's "Swap Shop", offering a 486 computer system in exchange (this was around 2001). I'd actually offered it to swap for either a welder or an extension ladder, and somewhat to my surprise I had 2 people call, one offering the welder and the other the ladder! Needless to say, I had to rush about finding the bits for a second computer system... ;-) BTH |
