Bicycle helmet vs Skate helmet
------------------------------------------------------------------------ A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the results, please visit http://www.unicyclist.com/thread/74911 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Question: Which helmet do you use? - EPS - CPSC rated (skate or bicycle shape) - Skate specific helmet ------------------------------------------------------------------------ I'm interested in peoples opinions. Do Unicyclists go benefit from a CPSC approved EPS helmet as opposed to the softer multiple impact rated skate helmets? The benefits of EPS are disputed anyway. This from Wikipedia: Helmet liners may be too stiff to be effective. Some standards require the use of headforms heavier and more rigid than the human head; these are more capable of crushing foam than is the human head. In real accidents "very little crushing of the liner foam was usually evident... What in fact happens in a real crash impact is that the human head deforms elastically on impact. The standard impact attenuation test making use of a solid headform does not consider the effect of human head deformation with the result that all acceleration attenuation occurs in compression of the liner. snip In real accidents, while broken helmets are common, it is extremely unusual to see any helmet that has compressed foam and thus may have performed as intended. “Another source of field experience is our experience with damaged helmets returned to customer service... I collected damaged infant/toddler helmets for several months in 1995. Not only did I not see bottomed out helmets, I didn’t see any helmet showing signs of crushing on the inside.” http://tinyurl.com/s85uw -- dangerlaef -"Oceania had always been at war with Eurasia"- 'Some of my Skydiving' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOQRf_Dhk9E) 'Some tame Aussie MUni' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oFttvIzhNws) 'Sydney to Wollongong by Unicycle' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=magizTRgiI0) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ dangerlaef's Profile: http://www.unicyclist.com/profile/14407 View this thread: http://www.unicyclist.com/thread/74911 Posted Via Usenet.com Premium Usenet Newsgroup Services ---------------------------------------------------------- http://www.usenet.com |

I use a skate helmet. I wear a "single impact" type Mtb instead of a skate helmet for the following reasons (in decreasing order). The visor (I prefer a visor that's wide and streight/flat) It's cooler More comfortable Lighter Mine has a fair amount of rear protection. My next helmet (possibly mid summer) will probably be either a Fox Flux or a Bell Variant. -- skilewis74 Ride everywhere and never just ride anywhere. Bicycle helmet vs Skate helmet
i am concidering purchasing a good mountain bike helmet (hard foam), they're light, they're comfortable and stylish (for activities such as cokering where i'm tempted not to wear a helmet at all), however i feel the only benefit is that they serve as an exoskeleton that will help protect me from sharp rocks, etc. that may be in my path. They are not soft, however i would rather bounce my head off of that material than a sharp rock or branch, or skid my head on asphalt and rip chunks of hair out (not fun). definitely a much better option than being w/o a helmet. With that being said, i really would prefer my head was in a skate helmet w/ multiple density foam in a serious crash. The shell is much better, nearly unbreakable, and the foam can actually cushion my head enough that i can walk away from crashes that would have given me a concussion w/ a traditional bike helmet w/o a headache. They've saved me on more than one occasion, and they're more along the lines of what i would prefer to trust my life to. i guess i'm gonna get a new skate helmet, lol! -- OneWheelLess Seriously, the other wheel just fell off one day. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ OneWheelLess's Profile: http://www.unicyclist.com/profile/16793 View this thread: http://www.unicyclist.com/thread/74911 Posted Via Usenet.com Premium Usenet Newsgroup Services ---------------------------------------------------------- http://www.usenet.com |

Polls on this forum annoy me. Nothing ever comes from them. Here you are asking what helmet type people use in the poll. What they use will not answer the question you pose which is, "do Unicyclists benefit from a CPSC approved EPS helmet as opposed to the softer multiple impact rated skate helmets?" A better approach would be to start a discussion of the benefits based on shapes and materials used in various available helmets. Skater helmets have a shape that protects the brain stem and may be more useful for riding styles in which falling backwards is very likely, for example. Whether or not 17 of our members use this shape does not make it safer or less safe.
