Avoid the rail-trail down the middle of the island. It's overgrown with
trees -- no views -- dead flat. The roads are a whole lot better. Light
traffic -- good views -- rolling (small) hills. Food is good, B&Bs,
lighthouses, etc.

Wally and Barbara Smith's new book about cycling PEI, NS and NB
should be out soon, they lived on PEI for about 20 years.

Hopefully, this book won't be banned (by Helms,Burton and Co.), like
their last cycling book :-)
http://www.bikingthemaritimes.com

I've cycled on PEI many times, mostly on the eastern end since that
is the closest to me. Last summer I cycled on the western end. It is
flatter. I even took the Alaska Highway to Alaska! Alaska is just
flat potato and hay fields!

Places to avoid are Charlottetown and Cavendish! I did cycle through
Charlottetown last summer. It has grown (for the worse) a lot in the
last 5 years. Seems like miles of shopping malls on all sides of it.
Actually cycling through the "city" wasn't too bad, even took a bike
path part of way.

The old rail line, about 200 km , the length of PEI, is now a bike
path. It may not be everyone's cup of tea. Some sections are rather
boring, not much scenery through bushes. It is a way to escape headwinds
(very strong winds on PEI) or hills. The trail meanders a lot too. When
they build the rail-line (1870s ?) every village wanted it to pass
through so that's why it wanders around! Surface of the trail varied
from hard pack to loose gravel.

Some of the unpaved roads can be good cycling, but again surface
varies from hard pack clay to loose sand. All red. Red dust will get into
everything!

"Your roads are RED! Why are your roads so red, Uncle Matthew?"
"Well, Miss Anne (with an "e"), I read somewhere that it's from
iron in the soil"

"Oh, no, Uncle Matthew -
"Do you suppose that it might be
The blood of some old tragedy
..."

What is the direction of the prevailing winds there?

Thanks

In the summer usually west or south-west.

This past summer, I turned around at Tignish,
rather than go out to North Cape and back, since I was there
in 1996. But in 1996 there was only one wind turbine there,
now there is a whole windfarm, which can be seen about 15 km
away. I've heard that windpower now produces about 5% of
PEI's electricity.
