I need to replace the headset on my hardtail. It's older, so I need a
1" headset. I am going to hit a shop tonight or tomorrow morning, but I will call around at lunch to see who has what in 1" threadless. Anyone have anything they'd suggest staying away from, or they'd recommend? Anything in particular I should look for? I don't want something heavy and cheesy that is going to fail soon or feel like crap, but I don't think I want to spend for a King. Strong, Light, Cheap - Pick any 2. Can I get fairly strong, fairly light and pricey but not outrageous? Also, some sites separate road and mountain headsets. What, if anything, is the difference? The LBS's around here don't seem to make that distinction. TIA, Dan |

Depends on what you're subjecting the thing to. $20 Shimano/Ritchey/ Cane Creek headsets all do fine by me, but I don't do any gnarly trail riding and always rock fenders in the rain. I'd start cheap and see if it breaks. It's not gonna kill ya if it goes bad. |

This bike gets driven to and from the trails more often than not, so it's use conditions are somewhere between moderate and abusive. Never any fenders, always a little mud (though I do avoid riding when the trails are too muddy, there's always spots and puddles) and stream crossings are standard issue. I ride lots of rocks and roots. Most everything else on the bike is high end, though I'm not sure about the headset. I doubt it's cheap, neither the frame nor fork are. That said, any recommendations? Also, are road and mountain really different? Thanks. |

Something like a Ritchey Scuzzy Logic with cart bearings for $50 might be the ticket if you wanna get fancy. Me, I'd just throw a $20 Ritchey Logic in the frame and see if it broke. Put a bit of innertube around the lower race when assembling and it might last five hundred years. Who knows? |

That said, I've had three of them, a couple cheap Cane Creeks, and a similar quality threaded Shimano STX and all were fuss free. I guess I'm not that hard on them. Maybe you're a $50 price point kinda guy? |

KNowing how I am on my stuff I like cartridge bearings. $50 is a comfy price point too, I figured I'd have to spend at least that. If I can find a Scuzzy Logic cart bearing locally I'll give it a good hard look. Thanks! |
