Default Advice wanted - where in Hawaii

On Mauna Kea, the road from the visitor's center (~9000') to the
summit (~14000') is not paved. Though altitude sickness is rare,

Stargazing on Mauna Kea was the highlight of our trip out there last
year. The visitor's center has a nightly stargazing program including
some 12" or slightly larger telescopes that are there all the time.

There are also some generous volunteers who bring their own huge
telescopes, including one who claimed that his scope was "better than
the University of Hawaii's scope at the summit." A glance though that
particular viewfinder easily showed deep sky objects, but instead of
looking at a print or a video screen, the multi-million-year-old
photons were actually hitting our retnas directly. Amazing.

For cycling though, I think Maui (up Haleakela or back down it) might
be a better destination.

O yeah. . That place sounds great!

One of my friends was stationed there and she told me it rains a LOT during
the winter months. If there is some way to check this out, I'd suggest you
look into it.

Riding in the rain in Hawaii is not unpleasant.

Usually, one can avoid the rain by going to the other side of the island.

What island or islands are best for bike riding?

For overall scenery, I'd pick Kauai but on Maui I'd especially
recommend the road to Hana if it's a sunny day. Traffic should be
negligible.

How many years, if I may ask?

Married Feb. 7, 1970, so 39 years for the contemplated Hawaii trip.
For 20, I managed to pull off a surprise trip to Paris. For 30, we
opted to do a "private" getaway to Marco Island, but unbeknownst to
Mary Ann, our 6 children preceded us there, and were waiting to
surprise her when we got to the hotel. I don't know what if anything
I can come up with for 40.

Thanks for asking

Fred and Bill are talking at a bar.
Fred- "Say Bill, didn't you just have your 30th wedding
anniversary?".
Bill- "Yeah.
Fred- "What did you do to celebrate."
Bill- "I took her to Paris."
Fred- "Paris? Wow! What the heck will you do for your 40th?"
Bill- "I don't know. Maybe I'll go back to pick her up."

Paris, Hawaii -- the bar's set pretty high. I don't think a trip to
the Green Bay Packer Hall of Fame is going to do it.

But you're a religious guy, and maybe your wife is, as well. Rome?

Going to watch the Packers play in Super Bowl XLIV should do it! But
there are a few contingencies involved with that.
