Lorry driver on mobile kills cyclist, walks free from court.

Road safety campaign group Brake was outraged by the sentence and
called for a change in the law.

Spokeswoman Lorna Jackson said: "This sentence reflects the current
problem faced by courts while they wait for the introduction of the
new charge of causing death by careless driving.

"The charge currently available is careless driving, which fails to
reflect that someone has lost their life, and thus the sentence handed
down falls far short of delivering any real sense of justice.

"When someone has been killed, it seems incomprehensible that the
driver will be back on the road in a year's time, which is why Brake
is urging the Government to ensure there is no unnecessary delay in
introducing the new charge."

A statement from the family which was issued shortly after the crash,
said: "Mary was a wonderful mother and granny. She is dearly missed by
her two daughters, four grandchildren and everyone who knew her.

"She lived life to the full and was well known in and around the
Histon area.

"She had many friends from her work in the libraries in the Cambridge
area and her work in Addenbrooke's Hospital, where she helped out in
the children's wards."

Field was also handed a £750 fine and ordered to pay £500 costs.
