Folks at my LBS have informed me that the single-piece Ashtabula crank
on my fixed gear 70s Schwinn Varsity (well it's a Collegiate really)
will work its way out of the bottom bracket from backpedal braking,
and thus I'm advised to convert to a 3-piece crank. The crank is
indeed showing signs of wiggle. I understand everyone loves the 3-
piece cranks, but I like the Ashtabula--do I really need to switch?

No need to swtich at all.
If that was the case, wouldn't coaster brakes cause the same problem?
Think of how many coaster brake cycles there are out there with one
piece crankcs.
