SPOTTED- Parent and Child on road cyclists

Cycling home from work yesterday past my local school I saw a mother
and her child (6 or 7 years old) cycling away from the school. Both
were on the road with the mother in the primary position following the
child who was closer to the kerb.
I've lived here for 15 years and its the first time I can remember
seeing a parent picking her child up from the school by bike.
Almost all the kids live within half a mile of the school and mostly
walk although there is a fair number who are taken to and from by
car.Despite living within the half mile catchment area.

Change a comin'?

A couple of weeks ago I set off down to the baker's for the morning's
breakfast supplies and saw *2* kiddyback tandems in the space of 15
minutes (and neither one was Igor, so that's at least one more local one).

Maybe a trip to the travel agent's will reveal the new ski brochure for
Hell... ;-)

I had to have the smelling salts the other day when an acquaintance
mentioned that she would be riding with her son to his new school so he
could learn the best route, then she'd leave him to it.

The reason for my shock is that this is in California (the American one,
not the Birmingham one).
