Default Shifters - Derailleur - Cassette

Hi,

I am hoping someone can clarify thissituation for me. My rear
derailleur (Shimano 105) skips a lot and requires "tuning up" about
every 3 or 4 months. It is about 2 years old, give or take. I bike
commute to work and occasionally ride on the weekends.

Here is my question. Should I replace it? How can I tell? I was
thinking of moving to Ultegra or Dura Ace. If I do change it, do I
need to get new shifters also (I have 105 shifters now)? And what
about the cassette? Are these things interchangeable?

Thanks for helping me sort this out.

The RD is the last thing I would replace.

Agreed--you can make even a $15 resin bodied Shimano mech shift just
fine if you:

1. check if rear dropout is not out of alignment,
2. clean/lube/replace cables and housing,
3. check if upper pulley is worn
4. replace chain,
5. replace cassette probably necessary if chain is worn.

Also check that the housing length is appropriate and not sloppy.
Might as well lube the derailleur pivots too. Spritz spritz.

I'll go for 2.3

About that lubing of the cables and housings thing -- if one is using them
cables with the slippery black polymer coating, and ones housings have
that Teflon tubing insert, then is lubing of the tubing necessary?

No. I only lube the cableguide under the BB.

In theory, no. Several manufacturers admonish 'do not oil' gear cables.

In practice, yes.

Ensure there are no frayed or kinked wires, no casing damage, casing
trimmed squarely and evenly, ferrules fit properly and the adjusters all
move before doing that. Oil isn't a panacea for other control cable errors.

Only if you want to remind yourself of that stupid song, "Play that
Funky Music White Boy".
'Lubing of the tubing' sounds like it was made for that song.

Do the least expensive things first.
Inner wires and housing.
Clean under BB guide.
Make sure the der hanger is straight.
Clean chain and cogs, lube chain..no tight links....

Do you mean it tried to go to another cog(skip) or does it skip while
on a certain cog?

One is der adjust or those things mentioned above..the other is worn
cogs.

Next is the chain, but have a decent bike shop measure it with a good
tool(We use Rohloff).

Doesn't that make it pick up a lot of road gunk down there?
