New Brakes on an Old Frame

Drilling is usually the best way - for the front at least.

a) yes, drill. Counterbore if you are fussy; drill undersize, ream and
counterbore if very fussy (second/third stages not applicable if the crown
is hollow); or

b) use a "normal" nut and appropriately curved spacer; or

c) if b) is unavailable because the mounting bolt is too short, get a
longer bolt (with/without new brake) and cut threads if required so b) will
work; and

d) ignore cries of "no, not c), that is a disaster waiting to happen" from
posters without shift-keys.
