Default HRMs - Polar or iPhone with the open source?

I bought polars up til now and was one of the early users as that's
what they gave us at the OTC. But now I think you can outfit an
iphone with sensors and open source hrm programs that allow all of the
functionality and more (map my ride)

What are others using and why?

Just an HRM discussion not about power monitoring. Thanks

Do you really need a monitor to know your heart rate? You've probably
ridden hundreds/thousands of hours with an HRM. I'll bet you can guess
your heart rate to a range of 5 bpm.

I do like to use them and I don't think I can guess accurately from
one day to the next but once I've ridden with someone I can usually
guess theirs knowing what mine is.

I am trying to help a pal decide if he should polar or use ANT+
