Tomorrow the offspring is dipping his cleats into the world of cyclocross
for the very first time. I have a feeling it may be a shock to the system
;-)

Still he's only doing it for fun, keep his fitness up and improve bike
handling skills. The latter may be of particular use in continued avoidance
of motorised numpties if yesterday's journey home from college is anything
to go by!

So has Vernon been doing some on-line shopping or is he going to use
(shudder) his Cervelo?

Good grief! Not the Cervelo!!

At Mildenhall we picked up a brand new Kinesis Crosslight Pro 3 frame &
forks for a remarkably reasonable sum of toonas. Since then, the offspring &
his father have been fettling. The bike is a mixtue of new and old bits. The
old bits from Cycling Stuff[TM] we had unused in the garage.

How did the offspring get on then As I myself have only attended 2
cyclocross events 1 of them being yesterday. My wife and kids picked a prime
spot to watch as they saw 6 crashes, 1 off which unfortunately was pretty
nasty. The course was hastily re-arranged after passing through the accident
spot on the first lap to slow riders down through the section. I managed to
stay upright for most of the day only sliding off once on what appeared to
be an easier section.

cheers

The offspring is a reconfirmed road man ;-) On the plus side, he managed to
stay upright.

There weren't any lorries or coaches to chase ;-)
But seriously, after the Big Build Up, are we going to get a result?

I've always had the utmost respect for those who compete in mudplugging.
Its a great sport and has all the drama you could hope for - short
laps, gruelling courses, tumbles,
man-against-mud-against-mud-against-man.
No relianceon slip-streaming artics ;-)
Its not a sport for softies.
Unfortunately in Britain cyclocross has lost much support and is now
second-string to MTB racing. Events only seem to attract friends,
helpers and the local dog population :-(
It deserves better.

We regularly go over to Belgium and see the top events over the
Christmas/New Year where there is a series of top professional events.
The Diegem Super Prestige is our favourite, where the pros can be seen
up close slogging it out while spectators sup hot grog and chestnusts
from braziers - and of course there is sometimes a British presence in
our own Roger H :-)
Whole villages are shut down for the races, which usually a circuit on
the village outskirts and a dash up the main street each lap. The
atmospere is tremendous.

Personally I never got to grips with the sport, although I once
organised the South of England Championships - and rode them.

But as a spectator sport, the top events should not be missed.

The lad is commended for having a go.
