Default Suntour Winner Freewheel

All -

I asked my LBS to loosen the cogs on a 6 speed Winner freewheel, so I
could get the spacers to use on another bike.

The mechanic said if he unscrewed the cogs, then all the bearings
would come out, and the freeweheel would be useless.

Is this correct?

Thanks!

Nope. "The mechanic" doesn't know the difference between screwing off a
cog and screwing off the bearing faceplate. The first is simple, the
sescond is a bit of a mess.

In fact, I don't know of a single freewheel or freehub that would behave
as "the mechanic" describes, and I've had both the cogs off and the
bearings out of a range of them.

If you are in the habit of changing cogs or spacers, you may find it
worthwhile to invest in a pair of chainwhips:

... for example.

Utterly false. Removing the cogs involves a pair of chainwhips, or one
chain whip and a freewheel vise, but it can be done without opening the
bearings of the freewheel body. I've done it many times. (Long ago, in
a land far, far away...)

Please note that Suntour had 2 different cog spacings: "standard" and
"Ultra", and several variations of the Winner freewheel culminating in
the "New Winner". Cogs and spacers were not always interchangable. A
good place to start figuring things out is Andy's Suntour Freewheel

Sorry, your tech is mistaken.
Yes, you were correct. Undo the threaded cogs and slide off
the splined sprockets with spacers as you originally asked.

Oh, don't feign surprise! Half the shops I go to wouldn't even
know what a freewheel is, let alone how to change a cog. These
kids were born after eight speed. I went to a super-duper high
end shop that did not even have a 23mm tool for removing an old
TA crank on a hand me down bike. On the other hand, they do know
how to install hydraulic disc brakes and service shock forks. I
wouldn't have a clue. -- Jay Beattie.
