Crank Bros. opinions?
I'm thinking about upgrading my pedals from standard Shimano SPD's to
some version of the Crank Bros. "eggbeaters," based chiefly on recommendations from other riders, etc. I can't decide if I need to go with the "Candy" or "Smarty" as opposed to the naked eggbeaters. I ride mostly dirt singletrack, rock gardens, general "cross country" riding and tend to avoid big dropoffs, although I do ride some fairly technical downhill sections. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance. |

I use the naked, original Egg-Beaters. Seems the weight benfit is lost if you go with the beefy models...I love them but there are some issues...they don't seem to last as long as my Shimano SPD's and they wear a groves in the bottom of my bike shoes which causes a little play after a year or so...but all in all, I prefer Egg-Beaters to SPD. For XC the standard type should suffice. |

Is there a big difference in Crank Bros. and Time pedals?

I've got plain Egg Beaters on two of my bikes and I think they're great, even for techical downhill sections. They have two main drawbacks. They're easy to clip in to, but if you miss clipping back in from a standing start on a climb, then your foot can slip off, when it may not do with a platform model. The cleats wear too quickly. Despite that, I'd take them over SPDs any day. |

You should get sole protectors with the cleats. |
