Default How does a team help in the Tour de France?

Forgive me, but I am new to cyclcing. I just don't understand how
Lance Armstrong's team (Discovery) helps Lance. Isn't he the one
pedalling?

They aren't really hostile. They just talk that way. If you were
sitting across the table from them drinking a beer they'd say the same
sort of stuff and you wouldn't think anything of it.
