How does a team help in the Tour de France?

Forgive me, but I am new to cyclcing. I just don't understand how
Lance Armstrong's team (Discovery) helps Lance. Isn't he the one
pedalling?

Not really. In yesterday's stage, the idea to send Hincapie at the
front
so that everyone would concentrate on him and no one would notice that
Lance had stopped pedalling. Apparently, it worked because no one
seems to have mentioned this.

They aren't really hostile. They just talk that way. If you were
sitting across the table from them drinking a beer they'd say the same
sort of stuff and you wouldn't think anything of it.
