The problem is that bikes are always borrowing somebody elses space.

I disagree. When I'm in the street, I *own* my piece of pavement. Most
of the time, I am gracious, and allow the cars to pass me. That's
because I am secure about my knowledge of this ownership, so for me to
be so kind as to let them use it is no skin off of my nose. However,
at any time, for my safety, I may reclaim that which is truly mine.

Generally, I find that when I reassert my ownership of my pavement, I
get very little guff from other traffic. Instead, I get
acknowledgement of my right.

Warm Regards,

Dear Clai

I hope you don¹t reclaim your ³ownership² in front of a municipal bus or tractor
trailer. No one wants you to be a hood ornament.

I find that truly aggressive people behave that way wether walking, driving, or
riding.

I don¹t like giving up my rights, but doing so is much better than being DEAD
right.

Always navigate by the laws of gross tonnage. Live long and prosper!

The MUPs around here have signs at each entry point saying to
bicycle on right and "walk on left facing bicycles", and have
illustrations of the same ideas painted right on the pavement with
arrows and such.

It works well, when people obey it, at greatly reducing such
situations.

I find that using an entire travel lane in front of the driver of a
bus or commercial truck works very well. It is far safer than hugging
the curb in a way that encourages them to squeeze by at less than safe
distance. There are some lanes that are marginally shareable with
cars, but when I see a really big vehicle I go ahead and merge into
the center of the lane.

I was surprised Stella didn't tear him a new one, knowing Stella.

I think this atonement stuff is getting to her, she posts once
in four months and it's all this kissy **** about apologies and
so forth.

*snif* . . . you noticed I was gone? I'm so deeply, deeply
touched. I want you to know, Eric, this means so much to me.
You are truly a sharing and caring man.

P.S. Kiss my saddle.

I definitely think this ng is going downhill, even Jobst has been
remarkably civil of late.

Was that better, or do I need to go back and read r.b.racing for a while to
get my flamethrower hot?

I don't think we need to disagree on this one. I claim my right in traffic
just like you do. I just make sure the cars are aware of what I am going to
do. However I always have to watch out for the idiot that is not expecting a
bike there and see to it I don't get in his way. I'm sure you act in a
similar way.
When I'm on a bike path it's the other way around. Pedestrians aren't
expecting me and I have to take that into account.

You don't understand how this works, do you?

It's not a matter of being aggressive. It's not a matter of giving up
anything. It's not a matter of being unsafe.

Warm Regards,

Claire

Point taken; and I do realize this. I'd have thought the post
would have provoked light-hearted replies or tales of similar
ilk, but you guys are just too durn sensible and level-headed.

I kinda expected a biking group to be on the side of the
bikers. I guess it comes from long experience and the
inevitability of the issue.

hey, mate I'm on your side. pedestrians are hazardous!

here where I live, we drive our cars on the left
always have.
but
pedestrians, walking pathways (not roads), tend to walk on the right.
why? I think that it is reasonably obvious to walk on the left
(side you drive your car) on pathways, in malls etc, to make the
traffic flow nicely. most of us drive cars or have driven in cars,
and have been brought up knowing that cars drive on the left.
so why walk right?
(answer/solution later)

consider this. I cycle to work, and at work I cycle on the pathways
to get to the building I work in. it is a university, ergo lots of
walking folk. I have no hassle with that and I ride far left, at
about 6km/h, a fast walk.
what do they do? twice now, I've seen a lone walker approaching.
they were walking on their far RIGHT. they see me from far way,
I see them, there is no other traffic on the pathway.
behold, about 4 meters from me they swerve RIGHT onto the grass to
pass me, yet there is a 3meter wide paved pathway available to the
left.

so it seems people naturally go right, since they are right handed,
or something. the solution is of course to ride on the right, which
the USA got correct I think, and to suspect all pedestrians of being
very vague and disconnected from the process of walking.

(btw I am lefthanded)
