i see people wearing fluorescent jackets.

in the day time, this seems like the most visible color.

but at night, wouldn;t white be better?

or/plus something reflective?

because the fluorescent stuff, depends on ultraviolet light to
activate its glowing properties.

at night, there is little if any uv from headlights
and streetlights..

Yes, you are quite right.

A lot of night gear does have reflective strips on. Mine does. :-)

I have a jacket made of Illuminite:
http://www.illuminite.com/index.asp . It's supposedly reflective
across its entire area. I bought it from Performance a while back,
when they combined yellow fabric with the Illuminite coating. It
appears that they've gone back to putting the Illuminite on dark
fabric- stylish, but less visible in low-light (dusk) conditions.

Large swatches of white/bright colors are most visible in most
lighting conditions. Reflectivity helps- but it shouldn't be relied
upon.
