Bicycling after gastric bypass surgery
I have lost 34 lbs. since having gastric bypass surgery on July 2 and
I STILL get wiped out on hills and have trouble keeping up! Maybe I can't eat enough to supply the energy I need. Anyone else here have gastric bypass or lap-band and can give me advice? |

Maybe I can't eat enough to supply the energy I need. Anyone else here have gastric bypass or lap-band and can give me advice? I've not had the procedure myself, so I can't comment from experience. I have had clients and coworkers who have had a gastric bypass procedure done and the majority have had dramatic improvements in their overall quality of life as well as their health. I hope you see the same results! Usually this procedure is done with people with morbid obesity, and usually those folks are in poor aerobic fitness due to being able to get only limited exercise (back and knee pain being one common limiter)- often for many years. It may be that your fitness is the limiter here. Gaining fitness takes time and your body is adapting to your weight loss, possibly changes in activity level and also changes in nutrition. This will, I am sure, get much better with time. It could very well be that you are not able to take in enough calories to avoid "the bonk" caused by muscle and liver glycogen depletion. Your doctor and dietitian would probably be your best resources for calculating how to deal with this. There are liquid athletic foods that have a high calorie concentration that might be suitable for you, or even something like Ensure or a "sports shake" (which tend to have a lot of vitamins, so check to make sure that it's compatible with the nutritional supplements you take already). Keep riding! Also, Google Scott Cutshall. His story is remarkable and inspiring. |

Anyone else here have gastric bypass or lap-band and can give me advice? Here's some advice - don't get impatient. Riding takes time to adjust to. I was not a physical masterpiece to say the least. For a couple of years after I started cycling again I would be climbing hills and stopping every quarter mile to catch my breath while 60-70 year old guys were riding past not even breathing hard. I thought that I would never reach that state but for the most part I can do that today. I've now been riding for about 20 years again and each year I've improved in some category. Hang in there pal and you'll catch up. |
