Tales from the fat-acceptance Cat 4 training crit.

I'm engaged in a low-key duel for my teammate's wheel with another
rider. We both want the line, we're riding closer and closer, and then
the reasonable happens and our arms touch and we're leaning on each
other (indeed, dude leans back enthusiastically. Unfortunately for him,
I am fat, and this is the one place in a bike race where it helps).

He starts swearing at me! I mean, what we were doing would be an
introductory bump drill, or "good morning" on the track. I told him that
wasn't worth even mentioning.

Then a few seconds later, after I thought of it, I asked, "what are you,
a triathlete?"

Punchline: his team was part of the decisive break, then swear-guy and
his other teammate bridged to the break, while I DNF'd.

Don't worry, you're building form.

My solution to guys like that was push them off the wheel, then
totally ignore them when they start yelling.

BTW, if a guy is leaning on you really hard, just move away from him
suddenly and he'll fall down.

thanks,

Nice Guy. presented by Gringioni.

A number of years ago Ed Beamon (Navigators team manager who also was
a good rider) tried to push me out of line -- my team was trying
(trying being the key word) to help chase a break with one of his guys
in it.

I yelled at him "What the fack are you doing!" and he yelled back "You
know what I'm doing."

Which shut me up with it's frankness..

I used to have a solution, until they started to make you take your
frame pump off before the start. Frame pumps were the original
multiuse tool, especially those aluminum/aluminium jobbies.

I tried to learn to unscrew the valve while moving, but lacked the
synchronicity.

My current excuse is that I'm peaking for cyclocross season. Around
September I will claim I'm peaking for track season.

Very good. I'll write Ed's line down on my top-tube for future reference!

PS: did you really say "fack"?

The leaning was no problem. Or at least, he wasn't going to move me
anywhere leaning like that. I didn't want to crash him, I just wanted a
wheel.

I talked to one of his teammates (who I know fairly well) after the
race, and when I told him about the "triathlete" thing, he seemed
shocked, like I called his teammate a child-molester or something.

Which was really funny, too!

Well... yeah. Calling a cyclist (racer) who's not a triathlete a
triathlete... and you don't expect that's going to get him all fired up
and try to grind you into the ground? My goodness, could you have said
*anything* to provide more emotional motivation to do well than that?
ANYTHING?

Here's the training regimen:
Stand in front of a mirror in your full Astana kit with the skintight
Lycra straining (the Lycra, not you)
Say menacingly, "Are you talking to me?"
Look around for other people
Look back at the mirror menacingly
Pull the gun

Do thirty reps a night, or until your wife pees herself laughing.
