Default 3 speed tire size.....

Hey.. got a tech question....... I have an old Royal Scot 3 speed. It
has the 26 x 1-3/8" tires..... I am able to fit a 26 x 2.125" tire
front and back. Will the 2.125 tire fit on the original wheel? ( I
dont have the wheel with the bike right now..otherwise I would have
tried)

thanks

No. 26 x 2.125" tires are made to fit on a rim with a 559mm beat seat
diameter. 26 x 1-3/8" tires are made to fit on a rim with a 590mm
bead seat diameter.

The tires for your bike only come in one width. To change that you'd
need different wheels and most likely different brakes too.

Too bad someone has not come up with a tire sizing system based on tire
width and bead seat diameter.

Nope. But if you can fit such a fat tire in the frame, aftermarket
26" (559mm) wheels are cheap if you want to switch to them. Fenders
likely won't work with such tires, and brakes may be an issue, but
that's what coaster brake wheels are for.

If you just want to get the thing rolling, the one size made for the
original rims is a perfectly decent width for normal riding.

They have-- and both the sizes in question long predate it. You can
call them something else if you'd like, but they already have names.

No.
Original British EA3s are 590mm, mountain bike decimals are
559mm.

I sincerly doubt it. Fractional size tires and decimal size tires are
measured totally differently.

(otherwise known as British or Canadian size vs American size.
The diameter of the fraction rim is larger than the diameter of the
decimal rim if I remember correctly.

Actually they DO come in more than one width (or always used to) but
the size range IS quite limited.

And restringing the wheel to put a decimal rim on the Sturmey Archer
hub may be an exercise in futility too - as from what I remember, MOST
use a different number of spokes too.

re width:
By brand perhaps. The classic era EA3 tires were
significantly wider but every retooling brings a smaller
width. No 'fat' (1-5/8") ones currently or in the most
recent two decades AFAIK.

re drilling:
Good point.
Traditionally British Sports bikes are 40h rear and classic
decimal rims were 36h only.

That was long long ago. Both 36h gearboxes and 40h decimal
rims are no longer rare at all. If the OP is so inclined,
for whatever reason, it's doable in 40h or in 36h
