Tried one for a few days, took it back. The GPS worked well, it
downloaded the data, showed a map of the route, with speed and
elevation. But I could not get the heart monitor to work.
Returned it, since so expensive, returned to using my Polar A3.

When something cost this much, I figure it should work out of the
box.... didn't give it much more of a chance.

Similar problems with a high end Polar HRM... it would not
download via the IR port into my laptop. The local store wasn't
much help, recommended buying the additional IR USB device.

I have considered the Forerunner 201, just to track
distance/speed/elevation. But for now it's Polar A3 and Cateye
Cordless8.

The Polar software looks better than Garmin, more detail (if it
can download to the computer).

The Forerunner is a tremendous product, sexy computer interface and
Internet sites provide value-add subscriptions for the guy on the go.
I'm a bike guy, so the GPS location stuff wasn't *the* most important
criteria for me, so I took it back. Had I needed a multi-sport
capability, I think it would have been a more compelling product.

I had the same experience. The heart monitor only worked a small
percentage of the time. I also took mine back for a refund, and bought
a Polar S720i instead. When I want GPS I use my Garmin Vista.

The Forerunner 301 is not ready for prime time.
