The spoke must be rigid, so both. Once moving it exists in a quantum
superposition of both tension and compression. Just keep it away from cats.

You can just use the old "16 of 20 on 7" setup. Get the standard
drive system, but install only 16 sprockets. It ought to work fine,
but you'll lose some of the close-ratio-ality of the nanodrive
system, or some of the range (depending on sprocket choice).

It does both, depending on where the spoke is. This means spokes don't
last long, but a complete change is quick and simple, with no trueing
involved.
