Actual time gap LA vs FC
According to ITV, the gap was 0.22 seconds, and the commentator
mentioned that as he crossed the line LA was messing with his gears and not driving for the line. 'That was closer than I thought', mused Lance. No kidding. Someone dropped the ball in updating the team on how close they were. |

See: http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/video/...-4-minute.html @~:20 DR Somebody miscalculated in Astana. You just don't ease up knowing that you're within one second of yellow. Johann is usually yelling in their earpieces. My guess is that LA miscounted and thought he was 6th (or 4th), which would explain easing up at 3-4 feet from the line. In the interview (part2) he seems to suggest that it's just as good to win the stage and gain time on their rivals. But he's full of it. For him to get yellow would be astounding and headline-worthy; epic, even. Winning the stage is merely 'good', in comparison, imo. He clearly blew it and I'm not sure he'll get the chance again. Certainly, it's better for him not to dwell on it - that's our job, heh. Thanks for the link. |

See: http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/video/...-4-minute.html @~:20 DR Oh, in addition, Lance says that had they gotten yellow they wouldn't have defended it (tomorrow). That's utter hogwash. Of course they'd have defended it during the next two flat stages - it'd be easy, all they'd have to do is keep the peloton together and as usual prevent any rivals from getting in a break-away. They'd do that no matter who was in yellow. They'd let the sprinters win the stage, but that doesn't affect the GC as he seems to imply. |

IIRC, they gave it away to Voeckler who kept it for several stages. Different situation. |

They don't have a team that will be able to handle that. |

Bruyneel has always defended the jersey only after the first set of mountain passes has been traversed. Even that is a bit of a red herring - his tactic is still the same: let suicide breakaways go if they don't contain any of the contenders. Before the mountains, it means giving up the jersey. After the mountains it appears that they defend it, but it's only because the time gaps are different. In any given stage, the tactics are the same. thanks, Kurgan. presented by Gringioni. |

This is a little different situation and I do think they'd make a modest effort to defend the jersey for two stages, maybe just for the prestige points of having Lance in yellow. But you may be right. |

If I understand correctly, that time gap was difference in the fractional parts (thousands of a second) between Cancellara and Armstrong in the ITT. This time difference had nothing to do with the TTT. -ilan |
