Default Training Question: Pre-base Training

Hi,

I got back on the bike this year after a 12-year lay-off. Without much
of a mileage base or structured preparation of any kind, I've performed
OK in competition. I've decide to quit racing for the remainder of the
season and start thinking about next year.

Popular wisdom suggests that I should begin building my base in
November (for a May-September season).

How would readers suggest I use my time between now and then?

I see you answered your own question there.

But seriously; ride for fun, but at least 3x/week and at least for 2h
continuously 1x/week. For example: Sunday a long ride, Wednesday and
Friday for 1.5h. Nothing too strenuous, preferably ride with one or two
friends (not more or it will inevitably become a training race) who you
know to be a bit slower. I always like to call up one of a few local woman
riders (slash racers) for my recovery rides.

Thanks Ewoud - do you have the numbers of any slash racers in my area I
could call?

For pimping services consult the Ed Raket personality instead.

Squats and deadlifts. Get as much cowbell as you can tolerate.

This is amusing to me since I'm in almost exactly the same situation as the
original poster, except maybe even older and slower.

I pretty much came to the same conclusion and just ride a few times a week for
fun. Mostly on a mountain bike out in the woods to get out from under the
Florida sun this time of year.

Not sure if Slash races. All those years of drug taking, drinking,
and smoking while in Guns & Roses has probably destroyed any athletic
ability. Not to mention that big hat he wears.
