Bad Backs -- Only in Humans?
Those of you who deadlift with no problems, bike non-stop, or jog all- day with no problems...are probably not as evolved! =) http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070715/...ans_walking_dc Also, good news likely on the horizon: http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070713/...bot_walking_dc |

The answer is simple, so even you may understand it. The human body was never designed to sit in a chair. Stand, crouch, lay down, but not sit in a chair. Chairs design came from being easy to make, not for comfort. Stand, crouch (caveman style) or lay down, and your back troubles will be gone. |

A large fraction of breed dogs suffer skeletal problems.
What is a pleasing appearance to their owners can be hell for their joints in middle age. |

A lot of skeletal problems in dogs and other animals (horses are susceptible to back problems, in particular) have to do with normal osteoarthritic processes as well as training injuries (overuse injuries and otherwise). There are also problems with genetic diseases (you're probably thinking of things like hip and elbow dysplasia) but they're not really the result of breeding for a particular skeletal structure. It's more a combination of failing to account for genetic health issues when breeding and plain old luck of the draw. Also, I don't think it's accurate to say that "a large fraction" of [pure-]bred dogs suffer skeletal problems - if I had to guess I'd guess that it's probably comparable to humans. Some breeds are more likely than others, of course. -- Melinda Shore - Software longa, hardware brevis - Prouder than ever to be a member of the reality-based community |

Yeah, now there's research suggesting that sitting upright is bad and a slight slouch is good! So who knows anymore...though I always did find sitting upright uncomfortable after a while, especially at the piano! Heck, my sports doc, some Fellow of the Royal Society of Orthopedic Surgeons, claims that running is bad for the back and that our backs aren't meant for running.... |

Thanks for posting this, I had absolutely NO idea! For those that are staunch believers in the "evolution theory" for us Homo-sapiens, trying to put the "family tree" of our species is an enigma. Something tells me that as time goes on, various scientists and archaeologists will always uncover yet, one more "puzzle piece" here and there, now and then. For some reason, I honestly don't believe that WE were ever to complete our line of evolution. It amazes me how QUICKLY we seemed to "evolve" during certain time periods yet, during others, it was a looooong boring time before our bodies made any noticeable changes. Even THEN, the 'change' wasn't always the "best" idea, but if it worked, unfortunately, it STAYED. I had heard elsewhere that our entire spinal bone structure is virtually saturated with errors due to "evolutions" kept changes that COULD have been done in a more efficient manner. Since "God" is out of the picture in this line of thinking, there are no "Checks and Balances" to rid errors made. Nature (a Godless one, that is) would simply do the "knee-jerk" reaction and keep the first changes that worked, no matter how FLAWED it was. Being a 'chronic painer', I find that realization very disturbing to say the LEAST! Wayne stomps away visibly upset, kicking and cursing inaudibly... Oh, BTW Prisoner; Thanks for giving "He Who "Extremely Dislikes" that nice little "jab" so nicely placed just under the "radar" enough to only be noticed by people of normal intelligence or above. LOL! Had YOU not, I may have. Isn't it "kind of, yet, understandably" upsetting how seemingly intelligent and USUALLY polite people say things they normally wouldn't say to them if they were face-to-face because of the unfortunate effect this unmoderated "user-net" has on 'certain' persons 'temperament' and/or 'courage'? There was absolutely NO reason whatsoever for "it" to make a remark about your (or anyones, for that matter) intelligence? I moved here, to Hawaii, to get away from the complete insanity of the "mainland Corporate senseless "stab-each- other-in-the-back" just to get one more step up on the "competence ladder" wink and the (practically) criminal behavior of DRIVERS who'll "flip you off" every day and what seems like, CONSTANTLY. That makes NO SENSE to me. What happens to (non-island living) people when they get behind the wheel of a vehicle?!!!? SHEESH! Sorry, that paragraph wasn't originally meant to be a "rant"! As usual, I derailed my "train" of thought again. (sigh...) ;-) Aloha Just For Now, Hawaiian Wayne |

In this case, it was a 15 year old Shetland Sheepdog. He ended up with severe spinal degeneration and bone spurs, and became paralyzed rather suddenly. I finally gave in to the inevitable and had him put down when he was finally in too much pain to want to eat. Force feeding him would have been the ultimate in selfish cruelty. It was not an easy decision... Seeing the spinal x-ray made the decision a little easier, but not much. http://i8.tinypic.com/4vhhxde.jpg -- Peace, Om Remove _ to validate e-mails.
